Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells have attracted great interest not only as a basic scientific research topic but also as a novel and advanced clinical tool in the past few decades . At present, 100 clinical trials related to filled mesenchymal stem cells have been registered around the world . Hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow are sensitive to radiation, whereas mesenchymal stem cells exhibit considerable radiation resistance. Intrinsic cellular mechanisms, including efficient oxygen reactive scavenging capacity and active DNA damage response status, have been reported to explain the radiation resistance of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. The precise response pathways between mesenchymal stem cells and donor mesenchymal stem cells, however, remain unknown in bone marrow transplantation after total body irradiation . This brief review summarizes our current understanding of the clinical impact of radioresistance in endogenous bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells.
